In 1998 Brighton’s city council decided to build a new library. The library was designed using a public-private partnership model and the public was involved in the planning. It became in many ways a sustainable building, and since its inauguration in 2005 the library has received more than a dozen awards for it. The library was also well accepted by the citizens. The increase in usage, as well as technical innovations led to some adjustments to the construction. The library continuously evaluates its consumption in order to improve. Seven years later a critical look at the energy consumption and feedback from the building occupants show how well the edifice actually performs according to calculations. 1998 entschloss sich die Stadt Brighton zum Bau einer neuen Bibliothek. Die Realisierung erfolgte nach dem Public Private PartnershipModell, und die Öffentlichkeit wurde an der Planung beteiligt. Es entstand ein in vielerlei Hinsicht nachhaltiges Gebäude, wofür die Bibliothek bereits mehr als ein Dutzend Preise erhielt. Die Bibliothek wurde von der Bevölkerung gut angenommen. Der hohe Zuwachs an Nutzern sowie technische Neuerungen machten einige Anpassungen am Bau nötig. Die Bibliothek evaluiert kontinuierlich ihre Verbrauchswerte, um diese stetig zu verbessern. Sieben Jahre nach dem Bezug wirft dieser Beitrag einen kritischen Blick auf den Energieverbrauch. Ein Feedback der Gebäudenutzer zeigt, inwieweit das Gebäude heute die bei der planerischen Kalkulation bezifferten Ziele erreicht.

Through a content analysis of 154 library strategic plans, this study examines and classifies the various interpretations of the concept of sustainability. Organizational and financial sustainability is the most-cited, followed by environmental sustainability, by sustainability related to collection development and management and then by social sustainability. Almost half of the libraries adopted a narrow view of sustainability, making explicit reference only to one type of interpretation. Instead, the other documents reveal the awareness that sustainability is a broad and transversal concept, reconnectable to every aspect of contemporary libraries and perfectly in line with their strategic values.

[ENG] Report of the survey carried out by the Emilia-Romagna regional section of the Italian Library Association (AIB) in 2020-2021. The survey aimed at mapping the initiatives, planned or developed by the libraries located in Emilia-Romagna, in order to contribute to the United Nations 2030 Agenda Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The project also intended to help work out a tool for similar surveys to be carried out in other Italian regions. Français: Que font les institutions bibliothèques en matière d'éducation relative à l'environnement~? Cet article offre une première caractérisation sur la base de trois exemples de mobilisation des bibliothécaires en Allemagne, en France et en Amérique du Nord. Ces exemples témoignent d'une intensification des actions mais aussi d'un certain flottement dans le positionnement. Si l'ensemble des nombreuses facettes fonctionnelles des bibliothèques peuvent être investies, le milieu de la bibliothéconomie bénéficierait sans doute des éclairages de la recherche en éducation relative à l'environnement et à l'écocitoyenneté pour clarifier ses intentions, mieux se coordonner aux autres acteurs de terrain et jouer ainsi un rôle plus significatif dans les évolutions culturelles en cours. English: What are library institutions doing in regard to environmental education? This article attempts a first characterization on the basis of three examples of mobilization of librarians in Germany, France and North America. These examples show an intensification of actions but also a certain hesitation in positioning. If all of the many functional facets of libraries can contribute, at this stage, the library community would likely benefit from the insights of research in environmental education and eco-citizenship in order to clarify its intentions, better coordinate with other actors in the field, and thus play a more significant role in the ongoing cultural changes.

It mentions the recycling and conservation programs spearheaded by the library at Michigan State University, the solar energy program at Mason City Public Library in Iowa, and programs at libraries in Austin, Texas and Berkeley, California.

Allein in Deutschland werden jährlich rund zwölf Millionen Tonnen Lebensmittel als Abfall entsorgt. Ein Großteil davon wäre eigentlich noch genießbar. Ob in der Produktion, der Gastronomie oder im Handel; es werden überall überschüssige Lebensmittel weggeworfen. Auch Verbraucherinnen und Verbraucher tragen einen erheblichen Anteil zur Verschwendung bei. Schätzungsweise die Hälfte aller Lebensmittelverluste, die jährlich in privaten Haushalten entstehen, wäre vermeidbar. Ein möglicher Lösungsweg könnte die Abgabe noch genießbarer Lebensmittel in sogenannten Verteilstationen sein.

The inclusion of libraries and access to information in national and regional development plans will contribute to meeting the global United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Sustainability is a hot topic these days. Demand for professionals and scholars who are knowledgeable about sustainability topics is growing exponentially. As with any nascent multidisciplinary subject area, sustainability students, scholars and professionals cope with the challenging imbalance of disorganized information abundance, coupled with knowledge scarcity. Questions far outweigh solutions and the pursuit of new knowledge abounds. For entrepreneurial librarians, environmentally conscious or otherwise, this is the perfect storm. Adept with much- needed research and organizational skills and a pre-existing ethic of collaboration and transparency, librarians are needed in this space. Motivated by their own personal passions and the needs of their patrons and institutions, entrepreneurial librarians demonstrate great leadership by carving new and essential niches for themselves in the emergent areas of scholarship and practice that embody sustainability.
