In 2010, the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education released, ``Sustainability curriculum in higher education: A call to action,'' encouraging infusion of sustainability topics into universities' teaching and research. Since then, academic programs and research related to social, economic, and environmental sustainability have enriched university curricula. An exploratory study was conducted to determine the position and engagements of academic libraries and information science schools in their contributions to scholarly sustainability activities and curricular initiatives. This article presents the results of the study which reveals a number of engagements by library professionals in the areas of sustainability, such as increasing open access to research, building sustainability-related collections and research guides, and incorporating sustainability content into information literacy. While academic libraries and information science schools are engaged in a broad spectrum of initiatives that support their institutions' sustainability research and curricular functions, this study indicates that such activities require a more targeted approach.

Good health and well-being are central to human development. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3 highlights the aspirations of this new universal agenda towards healthy living and well-being by 2030. All institutions, stakeholders, acting in collaborative partnership are expected to help national government attain the SDGs. This paper assesses the role of ten academic libraries in Ghana in meeting the Sustainable Development Goal 3. Using the case study approach, ten librarians were interviewed to ascertain the current and future roles in attaining the SDG3, their mode of collaboration and the challenges they encounter in the implementation of SDG3. Findings reveal that librarians have been collaborating with health and allied institutions in an often subtle manner to address some health concerns of the communities they serve. Traditional authorities, youth groups, faith-based organisations as well as government agencies were identified as potent partners for libraries to collaborate with to help attain the SDG 3. Interpersonal methods such as Focus Group Discussions and role-play, as well as mass methods such as print, electronic and social media, posters and flyers were identified as efficient means to reach out to people for the purposes of ensuring healthy lives and well-being. Issues which emerged as possible threat to this effort include perceived role conflict, funding, credibility of information, community acceptance. It is recommended that for any initiative of this nature to succeed, there must be a strong policy at the local or inter-institutional level for increased cooperation. Librarians on the other hand, are expected to assert themselves and play a strong advocacy role in addressing an important national agenda such as the SDG3.

Besucherinnen und Besucher der Philologischen Bibliothek der Freien Universität Berlin haben seit dem 10. Januar die Möglichkeit, nicht nur Bücher zu wälzen, sondern auch in die Pedale zu treten. Auf Anregung der Bibliotheksangestellten Janet Wagner wurde im Lounge-Bereich in der dritten Etage der Bibliothek ein Fahrradergometer zur Verfügung gestellt. So können Nutzerinnen und Nutzer sich zwischen ihren Lernphasen bewegen und ablenken oder während des Lesens strampeln. Die körperlichen Mühen haben aber auch einen umweltfreundlichen Mehrwert: Das Fahrradergometer erzeugt beim Radeln Strom, der zum Aufladen von Smartphones oder anderen mobilen Endgeräten ausreicht.

This article shares the results of the investigation on environmental sustainability practices within public libraries in Portugal for the Master Course in Library and Information Science at Lisbon University. The work intends to be a line of thought that meets the goals for sustainable development outlined by the United Nations and the International Federation of Libraries Association - a proposal for the inclusion of libraries and information in the post-2015 agenda. The research of green libraries around the world demonstrated a growing number that applies environmental sustainability criteria in their strategic and management action. Emerging academic research, conferences and seminars devoted to the theme proposed revision of the academic curriculum in Library Information Science. Library professional associations worldwide are creating working groups and encourage debate on environmental sustainability and the concept of "global library". To understand the Portuguese situation in this matter, questionnaires were sent to all municipal libraries in each district, resulting in a sample of 84 public libraries. Purpose The purpose of this research paper is to examine how Canadian Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified libraries are facilitating awareness about environmental sustainability to library users. Design/methodology/approach Twenty-four Canadian LEED-certified libraries were surveyed regarding internal initiatives, and methods used to promote their certification and green building features to library users. Findings The research found that the majority of Canadian LEED-certified libraries were incorporating a variety of internal initiatives and methods to highlight their LEED-certification to library users. The findings show the majority of these libraries were actively involved in creating awareness about this topic to library users. Originality/value This research may provide valuable information for libraries wanting to incorporate initiatives that bring awareness to environmental sustainability, or for libraries wanting to use existing green building features to help leverage awareness and learning about this topic.

Energy crisis and environmental challenges are becoming greater economic, health and social concerns of the day. Building design and construction processes, whether in the developing or developed world, have to address environmental issues. Library buildings, commonly known as intellectually stimulating and scholarly community places, have been, for some time dealing with this pressing need in quite a few countries. The Green Library Movement discussions in terms of building design and construction of libraries have been going on for a few decades, but only a handful of libraries with green or environmentally sustainable design have been built so far in the Asian context. In most cases, the budget allocation for library buildings is low making the case for sustainable and energy efficient buildings, stronger. This research tries to shed light on the opportunities and challenges of green or environmentally sustainable library buildings, focusing specifically on Asian countries with locally available resources, standards and climate assessments.

Nachhaltigkeit und Umweltmanagement in Unternehmen haben in den vergangenen Jahren vor dem Hintergrund von Globalisierung, dem veränderten Bewusstsein der Konsumenten und als Wettbewerbsfaktor eine gestiegene Bedeutung erhalten. Die ekz.bibliotheksservice GmbH als größter deutscher Komplettanbieter für Bibliotheken hat im Jahr 2011 ein Umweltmanagement eingeführt sowie eine Zertifizierung nach DIN EN ISO 14001 erlangt. Diese DIN ist auf dem Weg, eine ebenso große Bedeutung zu erlangen wie die ISO 9001, die inzwischen zu einem internationalen Maßstab für das Qualitätsmanagement geworden ist. Diese DIN-Norm hilft Unternehmen bei der systematischen, dokumentierten, objektiven und regelmäßigen Bewertung ihrer Leistung für die Umwelt. Der Beitrag fokussiert auf das Thema Umweltmanagement und schildert die grundlegenden Überlegungen vor der Einführung und geht auf die Prozessschritte ein. Ein Ausblick auf die geplanten, weiteren Schritte und eine Vision für die Unternehmenszukunft in diesem Bereich schließen die Darstellung ab. Against the background of globalization and a new awareness by customers, sustainability and environmental management have become more and more important. In 2011 ekz.bibliotheksservice GmbH, the largest German library supplier, implemented an environmental management strategy and achieved DIN EN ISO 14001 certification. This certification is becoming as important as the certification ISO 9001, which is an international measure of requirements for quality management systems. The DIN 14001 standard supports companies in systemology, and well-documented, objective and continual evaluation of their environmental performance. This article takes as its theme environmental management and describes the basic considerations to be taken into account before the introduction of such a management approach. It describes the steps to be taken throughout the process. To conclude the article, the next stage in the process is described and a view of where the business is going in terms of environmental awareness is outlined.

Poster represents benefits (advantages) that Makerspace brings to National Library, Public libraries and most importantly to the users. The aim of the poster is to present Makerspace as a bridge that connects Traditional Library and emerging technologies such as 3D printing, Coding, sustainable design, Virtual Reality and etc. Makerspace is a successful service from National Library of Lithuania that proved to be a good way to attract new users and strengthen library‘s community. In almost 3 years‘ time 10000 users have used our services and discovered library in a new and exiting way. IFLA WLIC 2019 main topic “Dialogue for change“ was exactly what we wanted to communicate through bringing our expertise to the conference. Our successful service is a great way to encourage other libraries to take on courageous initiatives, unconventional solutions and open the libraries‘ door to meet technological changes that are forming new way of learning, communicating, sharing and creating. Day-to-day People's interests are growing for green movement in different fields. In the field of Library and Information Science, a new concept named Sustainable Library or Green Library having popularity among LIS Professionals. People need green food to feed as well as green Library to read. Green Library is not only a thought, but also a movement towards the sustainable development of libraries all over the world particularly in development countries. The green library movement involves librarians, library staff, library users, libraries that are dedicated to greening libraries and reducing the environmental degradation. ``Feed Green to Read Green'' is a sign of ``as people take care their body for a better health, they should take care their library's health (development). It calls for ``Go Green'' in daily foods as well as daily library activities.
