Purpose: The objective of the article is to determine the numerical increase in publications on green libraries and the dynamics of its development as well as to determine the thematic structure of the scientific literature in the field of green libraries and its changes as a representation of research in this area. Design/methodology/approach: The research material consisted of publications on green libraries published between 1991 and 2020, indexed in the Web of Science database. The bibliometric method was used to determine the numerical increase in publications on green libraries and the dynamics of its development. In order to characterize the thematic structure of publications representing research in this area, content analysis was performed. Findings: Quantitative analysis of the literature on green libraries has shown that this is a new area of research not explored with constant intensity. The time of publishing materials on green libraries can be divided into two periods: the so-called period of first publications between 1991 and 2006, and the period between 2007 and 2020, when the number of publications increased relatively systematically. The content analysis confirmed the hypothesis that the most frequent theme is the issue of a green building and its management. It showed that the period after 2010 is the time of building a theoretical framework for a new research field, i.e. green libraries. Originality/value: The main value of the article is the performance of a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the scientific literature indexed in the Web of Science devoted to green libraries, from the moment of the first publications to the present day. The codebook developed for the needs of content analysis can constitute the basis for the development of criteria for the evaluation of green libraries and guidelines for their organization.
Sharma, Ajay (2019). Green library building: A case study of SVNIT Library: Paper presented at 2nd International Conference on Librarianship Development through Internet of Things & Customer Service, Mehsana, Gujarat, India.
A library is the heart of the institution. Prerequisite for the successful functioning of each section of a library is good library building which supports all the activities with the economy. The building supports the economy in its function if it utilizes resources judiciously. The concept of a green building came into public interest during the 1960s and 1970s when natural resources crisis and pollution explosion increased to the serious concern. As an integral part of society, libraries are also influenced by the concept of the green and sustainable building. The planning and design process of a new library building is a big and complex task. A successful library building can be planned only if there is close involvement of architect, library professional and the management. Plan and communication are crucial for successful new library building construction. In 2017, the central library of Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT), Surat was shifted to its new library building. The planning for the new library building was started in 2013. This paper covers the various aspects of the green /sustainable library building and Green Building Rating Systems (GBRSs). The paper discusses the various green concept adopted by the new library building of SVNIT. This paper also provides a brief overview of the planning and design of new library building.

Library and librarian are directly related to the society, they should not harm our nature but they should play as role leader to save our natural environment. This paper deals with what green library building is, how they are accredited, what are the things required for, and also what is the future of Green Library Buildings in our modern India.
Tseng, Shu-hsien (2008). Green library design and evaluation: The Taipei Public Library, Taiwan. New Library World, 109(7/8), 321-336. DOI: 10.1108/03074800810888159
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to introduce the planning and architectural design features, and the post--occupancy evaluation (POE) of the Beitou Branch Library in the Taipei Public Library System. This paper also proposes possible solutions in response to the public's suggestions for improvements. Design/methodology/approach A library--user survey was employed to appraise the functioning of the Beitou Branch Library by the general public. The questionnaire for this survey was divided into three parts: background information of patrons; patrons' use of the Beitou Branch Library; and patrons' opinions on the facilities of the Beitou Branch Library. The 511 valid returned patron questionnaires were numbered and processed by means of Microsoft Excel statistical analysis. Chi--square testing, ANOVA and Pearson T--test were then used to analyze the relevant data and statistics. Findings The findings from the Beitou Branch Library survey are as follows: its innovative design and unique architecture and furniture has created a trend for new design concepts in Taiwan; it increases the number of library visits; it increases the visibility of the library and changes the stereotype of the library in the public's mind; it embodies the principles of ecological education and has become a multi--faceted learning center; it has gained the support of local residents and professional experts; it has generated corporate sponsorship of green library buildings; and the average numbers and distribution of frequency indicate that, other than ``convenient parking'' and ``number of computers in the computer area'', patrons were generally satisfied with the library's facilities, with all other categories receiving an average rating of 3.5 or greater.

Čadovska, Ivana; Tkalčić, A.-M. (2017). Green literacy as part of a strategy for the development of information service. Vjesnik Bibliotekara Hrvatsk, 60(1), 65-77
Green literacy represents the ability to understand the impact of human decisions and actions on the environment by raising awareness of sustainable development and encouraging critical thinking. Its task is to change the behavior of an individual or the entire institution. Although the green literacy was first defined back in the early 1990s, at the same time when the green library movement was created, it is more important today than ever before. Libraries, as dynamic institutions that follow the new development trends and provide a broad range of information and services, have recognized the significance of ecology and sustainable development from the beginning. Therefore, they are a logical starting point for developing literacy of their users. This paper aims to introduce green literacy in the context of information literacy and to define its role in the development of libraries, especially within information services which represent the central place of education and informing for the users, and act as promoters of new services and activities in every library. Finally, a brief overview of the most important environmental projects related to user education in Croatian libraries is given.
Albertyn, Kim; Zinn, Sandy (2022). Green public libraries: Library users' perspectives. Innovation: Journal of appropriate librarianship and information work in Southern Africa, 64, June 01
The study set out to determine users' perceptions of green libraries and what libraries are doing to create awareness about environmental sustainability. An adapted green library classification was used to guide and interpret the study. The study adopted a quantitative approach and copies of a questionnaire were distributed to 180 patrons in four City of Cape Town libraries. The data were analysed using SPSS version 23 and results were presented using pie charts, tables, frequency counts and simple percentages. Findings established that respondents were familiar with the majority of environmental terms and the libraries are carrying out four of the eight environmental practices. These are: environmentally sustainable resources; natural ventilation; posters or displays on environmental crises; and natural lighting. The sources respondents most frequently used to find out about green issues were social media, television, books, schools, and magazines. A slight majority of respondents indicated that their libraries were doing enough to promote environmental sustainability. At the same time, most respondents agreed that there is a need for public libraries to educate users on green living and to offer green information literacy. Recommendations include: public libraries creating displays/posters; having educational talks and programmes; and activities and events on green issues that target different audiences.
