Connecting with nature and getting time outside is known to benefit both mental and physical health, acting to reduce depression, anxiety, and stress levels. In urban areas, however, there can be limited opportunities for exposure to natural elements such as plants, native animals, and sunshine. For this reason, providing inviting outdoor areas with lush vegetation at libraries and other public institutions can increase community well-being (White et al, 2013). If done well, these nature areas can also make a library space more eco-friendly and improve sustainability. Programs held in open air areas are also less likely to spread contagions among attendees and can extend programming space as Auburn Public Library in Auburn, AL has found. In this article, we'll highlight some of the successes of utilizing outdoor space at Auburn Public Library, an urban library in Auburn, AL, USA.

Considering public libraries as fundamental actors of the local economy -- for the variety of resources they offer, which may contribute to the wealth and vitality of the community -- may be part of a territorial development strategy in line with the U.N. 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The 2030 Agenda is a document that represents an undisputed and fundamental point of reference also for public libraries, involving them from different points of view. Just to mention a few of the objectives: provide quality, fair and inclusive education, and learning opportunities for all (goal 4); encourage sustainable, inclusive, sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all (goal 8); build a resilient infrastructure and promote innovation and fair, responsible and sustainable industrialization (objective 9). Agenda 2030 expresses a clear opinion on the unsustainability of the current development model, not only on the environmental level, but also on the economic and social ones and calls for the involvement of all components of society for its sustainable overcoming: from businesses to the public sector, from civil society to philanthropic institutions, from universities and research centers to integration and culture operators (including, above all, public libraries).

After attending a member orientation session, Seed Library members can borrow vegetable, herb and flower seeds from our collection, with the promise to return dried seed from their successful crops to the Seed Library's store for the next growing season. Das war ein weiterer Schritt in Richtung nachhaltige Entwicklung, die seit Gründung der internen Arbeitsgemeinschaft »Grüne Bibliothek« im Jahr 2018 den Mitarbeiterinnen und Mitarbeitern ein Anliegen und offiziell im »Bibliotheksentwicklungsplan 2025« verankert ist.

This platform makes projects of German-speaking libraries visible that are committed to implementing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. This article presents the joint and national initiatives of the four library associations to implement and publicize the 17 global Sustainable Development Goals. The independent German “Green Library Network” will also be presented.

Die Agenda 2030 der Vereinten Nationen benennt insgesamt 17 Ziele für eine nachhaltige Entwicklung unseres Planeten. Viele Bibliotheken engagieren sich für die Erreichung der in der Agenda genannten Ziele; schon seit Beginn der 1990er Jahre versuchen sie ihre negativen Auswirkungen auf die Umwelt zu minimieren. In dem Zusammenhang ist oft von glqqgrünen Bibliothekengrqq oder einem glqqgrünen Bibliothekswesengrqq die Rede. Bisher dazu veröffentlichte wissenschaftliche und auch populärwissenschaftliche Beiträge verwenden diese Begriffe, die dort enthaltenen Definitionen sind jedoch zumeist vage und mehrdeutig. Konkret fehlt es in der bibliothekswissenschaftlichen Fachliteratur an allgemein akzeptierten Definitionen dieser Begriffe. Auch ein standardisiertes und allgemein akzeptiertes Konzept zur Umsetzung gibt es bisher nicht. In der folgenden Arbeit wird deshalb versucht die Begriffe glqqgrüne Bibliothekgrqq und glqqgrünes Bibliothekswesengrqq genauer zu definieren als bisher. Zudem wird der Versuch unternommen, die spezifischen Themenbereiche eines grünen Bibliothekswesens zu bestimmen und mögliche Umsetzungsprozesse zu beschreiben.
