Libraries exist in every kind of neighborhood; they already serve as community hubs; they're often supported by Friends groups; they have existing resources (nature books); they're often more flexible than schools; they're known for being safe---and they're a perfect, if unexpected, institution to connect people to nature.

In den vergangenen Jahren sind in einigen deutschen Bibliotheken Saatgutbibliotheken mit unterschiedlichen Kooperationspartnern und Konzepten entstanden. Es gibt beispielsweise Tauschbörsen, bei denen die Interessierten selbstständig Saatgut und teilweise auch Pflanzen tauschen können. Hierfür stellt die Bibliothek Räumlichkeiten zur Verfügung und dient als "Austauschplattform". Einen anderen Ansatz verfolgt die Karlsruher Saatgutbibliothek. Hier liegt der Fokus auf regionalen, teilweise sehr alten Sorten und Kulturpflanzen. Möglich wurde dieses spezielle Angebot durch die Kooperation mit der Grün-Alternativen Hochschulgruppe (GAHG) des KIT Karlsruhe.

Mit selbst genähten Taschen aus Stoffresten wird in der Bücherei Purgstall nicht nur Werbung für die Bibliothek gemacht, sondern auch ein Beitrag zur Umsetzung der Nachhaltigkeitsziele geleistet.

Der Weltverband der Bibliotheken IFLA fordert alle Bibliotheken weltweit auf, ihren Beitrag zur Erreichung der in der Agenda 2030 der Vereinten Nationen festgeschriebenen Nachhaltigkeitsziele zu erreichen. Die Förderung und Nutzung von Ressourcen bürgerschaftlichen Engagements kann dazu dienen, sowohl die Ziele in der Bevölkerung bekannt zu machen als auch Aktivitäten zu ihrer Umsetzung in Gang zu bringen.

Wie überzeugen wir Lehrkräfte der MINT-Fächer von einem Bibliotheksbesuch? Wie vernetzen wir uns besser? Womit begeistern wir 10- bis 13-Jährige? Die Werkstatt Neues Lernen der Deutschen Telekom Stiftung hat in der Stadtbücherei Schorndorf nachhaltige Lernprozesse angeregt -- und das nicht nur bei den teilnehmenden Kindern. Im Frühjahr 2021 brachte das Projekt Lehrkräfte mit Akteuren von außerschulischen Lernorten wie Bibliotheken oder Medienwerkstätten in Kontakt. In unserem Team war eine Fachangestellte für Medien- und Informationsdienste federführend für das Projekt tätig. Sie wurde im Verlauf des Projektes von einer zweiten Kollegin unterstützt. An zwei Werkstatttagen traten die teilnehmenden Lehrkräfte und Akteure von außerschulischen Lernorten wie Bibliotheken oder Medienwerkstätten in einen interdisziplinären Austausch. Ziel war die Entwicklung innovativer Ideen für neue Lehr- und Lernformate.

Designing lighting for zero-net energy buildings poses unique and fascinating design problems. Beyond the challenge of providing lighting loads on the order of .1W/sqft², these projects require toolsets beyond the typical scope of a lighting design consultant, including detailed controls design and photometric predictions of available daylighting. These new roles are part of a broader trend in lighting design as, driven by new code requirements and a general push towards high-performing buildings, lighting design is becoming a more technical, metrics-driven profession. There's a delicate balancing act here, and indeed we have the same responsibility to these projects as any other: lighting that is comfortable and functional for the occupants, that supports the architectural gesture, and that is available within the project budget. So the task is not simply to design the absolute minimum energy density (although yes, also that), but rather to identify ways in which all of these constraints may be harmonized, and embrace the collaborative and iterative workflow that these projects demand. This case study is written for architects, engineers, owners and others that want an overview of the lighting design process for ultra-low energy density buildings. I'll gloss both the absolute basics and the more esoteric technical details in favor of discussing practical techniques that we used successfully to further the project goals, and the trade-offs we confronted.

In business school, we're taught that sustainability is like a stool with three legs representing its environmental, financial, and social aspects. Without any one of these legs, the stool collapses.

Environmentalism and climate change are hot topics of conversation in society today, but libraries have long been a supporter of the environmental movement and going green. Often libraries have shown their agreement with green movement ideas through the construction or renovation of green libraries. However, with decreasing budgets, many libraries cannot afford new construction or the fees associated with becoming green certified. How then can libraries continue to support the green movement while on a budget? This chapter argues that while green certification is a good goal to have, if libraries would switch their focus to the wellness of their employees and patrons instead, then libraries could still have a positive impact on the well-being of their communities and enact healthy and environmentally sound initiatives, while also staying within their budget.

Überschwemmungen, Hitzeperioden, Dürren, Brände machen die unmittelbaren Auswirkungen der Klimakrise bereits vielerorts sichtbar. Mit dem Pariser Abkommen von 2015 haben sich fast 200 Staaten verpflichtet, die Erderwärmung auf einen Wert von maximal 1,5 Grad zu begrenzen, und auch Deutschland hat sich mit dem nationalen Klimaschutzgesetz das Ziel gesetzt, bis 2030 Treibhausgase um 65 Prozent im Vergleich zum Jahr 1990 zu reduzieren. Diese großen Klima-Ziele sind nur erreichbar, wenn sie als gesamtgesellschaftliche Aufgabe verstanden werden und ein Transformationsprozess auch im Kulturbereich stattfindet.
