The discussion around green libraries has been largely limited to the buildings, i.e., to subjects like the energy efficiency of new constructions and basic renovations. However, we cannot rebuild all libraries and we have to operate environmentally in existing buildings and without new resources. Libraries can express their commitment to green values and offer an open and easy access to environmental knowledge. Moreover, offering shared space and new kinds of items to be borrowed are examples of new environmentally sustainable activities. To take a clear stand and to create a visible green image for the library is an important part of environmental work. Sustainability and new, environmentally friendly services are ways to create a good image and thus to market libraries to decision makers and customers. Die Diskussion über ‚grüne‘ Bibliotheken war bisher weithin beschränkt auf die Gebäude, bspw. auf Themen wie die Energieeffizienz bei Neubauten und bei Renovierungen. Allerdings können nicht alle Bibliotheken neu gebaut werden, denn auch in bereits existierenden Gebäuden muss umweltfreundlich und ohne neue Ressourcen gearbeitet werden können. Bibliotheken können ihr Engagement für grüne Werte deutlich machen und einen freien und leichten Zugang zu umweltbezogenem Wissen anbieten. Doch darüber hinaus sind gemeinschaftliche Räume und neuartige Ausleihobjekte gute Beispiele für innovative Umwelt- und Nachhaltigkeitsaktivitäten. Deutlich Stellung zu beziehen und ein sichtbar grünes Image zu entwickeln, ist ein wichtiger Teil der Umweltarbeit einer Bibliothek. Nachhaltigkeit und neue umweltfreundliche Angebote sind ein Weg, ein positives Image zu gestalten und so Bibliotheken gegenüber Entscheidungsträgern und Kunden als ‚Marke‘ zu präsentieren.

One in four Danish public libraries has a green operating policy. One in seven has taken environmental aspects into consideration in the planning of their buildings, while approximately one in six works with environmental aspects in other contexts – for instance communication. This article focuses on two Danish case studies. Firstly, on sustainability in public libraries with Albertslund Public Library and the Green Cities libraries as examples; secondly, sustainability in the construction of public libraries using Århus Public Library as a case study. Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung (kurz: BNE) -- das klingt sperrig und abstrakt. Auch reiht sich die Bezeichnung nicht so geschmeidig in die bunte Vielfalt der Bindestrich-Pädagogik ein: Bibliothekspädagogik, Medienpädagogik, Literaturpädagogik -- aber hier eben nicht frqqNachhaltigkeitspädagogikflqq. Denn bei Nachhaltigkeit steht ein Entwicklungsprozess im Fokus, der aus einer bestimmten Haltung heraus mit und durch Menschen gestaltet wird und interdisziplinär in viele Richtung ausstrahlen kann. Dieser Entwicklungsprozess ist methodisch und inhaltlich von einer großen Offenheit geprägt und findet in der Agenda 2030 1 mit ihren 17 Zielen einen umfassenden Orientierungsrahmen. Fragen der Ökologie und Naturwissenschaften, der Wirtschaft, Technik und Zukunftsgestaltung in Politik und Gesellschaft, der Kulturwissenschaften, der Ethik und des sozialen Miteinanders spielen dabei eine Rolle -- aber eben nicht jeweils für sich betrachtet, sondern kooperativ gedacht und gestaltet. Bibliotheken sind ein Teil dieses agilen Netzwerkes.

Mit dem Aufkommen von eBooks und den dazugehörigen Lesegeräten drängt sich im Zuge des neuen ökologischen Bewusstseins der Gesellschaft die Frage auf, ob eBooks eine umweltfreundlichere Alternative zu Büchern darstellen. Verschiedene Studien versuchten bereits, darauf eine Antwort zu finden, in dem sie die Umweltauswirkungen von Büchern und eBooks bilanzierten. Es wurde jedoch ersichtlich, dass die Ergebnisse nur fallbedingt gelten können, wenn sie den Leser als individuelle Einflussgröße nicht einbeziehen. Die vorliegende Arbeit sucht deshalb nach einem Bewertungssystem, dessen Ergebnisse das Leserverhalten zur unabdingbaren Variable macht. Als Basis eines Bewertungssystem wurden die Umweltauswirkungen von einem Hardcover, einem Tablet und einem eReader dokumentiert. Neben ökologischen Umweltfaktoren wurden auch ethische und moralische Aspekte untersucht. Die auffälligen Differenzen in der Literatur wurden zur kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Produktlebenszyklus von Büchern, Tablet und eReadern genutzt. Als Methode, um sowohl quantitative als auch qualitative Umweltauswirkungen von Büchern und eBooks vergleichen zu können, wurde eine Nutzwertanalyse durchgeführt. Im Gegensatz zur häufiger genutzten Ökobilanz als Vergleichsmethode zwischen Produkten, bietet die Nutzwertanalyse verschiedene Stellschrauben, die eine Empfehlung für Buch oder ebook sehr viel detaillierter und anwendungsbezogener machen. Die Tauglichkeit des daraus entwickelten Bewertungssystems, welches in Form eines Excel-Tools umgesetzt wurde, wurde mit mehreren Lesetypen und Szenarien geprüft und ausgewertet.

Es werden auch die Potentiale aufgezeigt, die sich für Öffentliche Bibliotheken in Kombination mit ihrer Rolle als "3. Ort" und einer Ausrichtung auf soziale und ökologische Nachhaltigkeit ergeben. A survey of more than 1700 library staff worldwide identifies how libraries contribute to five of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The similarities between academic and public libraries' adoption, contribution, and use of the Sustainable Development Goals are reported. The results indicate that library staff do substantial work around all five of the selected Sustainable Development Goals. Sometimes the activities are a result of integrating the Sustainable Development Goals into strategic planning, but at other times the activities are a result of programming that library staff undertake as part of their mission. The majority of the respondents have not incorporated the Sustainable Development Goals into their strategic planning. However, the libraries' support of the Sustainable Development Goals is demonstrated by the activities the library staff are engaged with and the respondents' comments. The activities identified here can be used to inform library strategic planning and to help library staff maximize their library's impact on sustainable development.

Developing buildings that are sustainable and walk softly on the landscape is an area where libraries have shown considerable accomplishment, and in so doing, have served as examples of both ingenuity and ethical leadership. This paper presents direct experiences and research on sustainable library buildings that are inspiring, functional, and successful. The paper consists of two sections. The first section answers the questions: what does sustainable mean? what are examples of library building projects across the world that have developed sustainable, green buildings? what are the characteristics of those buildings that define sustainability, effectiveness, and cost efficiency? The focus is on well-developed, full-size library facilities and includes two case studies of awardwinning green libraries and interviews with the architects who designed them. The second section suggests that developing a green building is only the first step to assuring integrated sustainability. Other necessary, long-term components are required, such as understanding the needs of the community being served, developing strategies to deliver services, building organizations, and providing leadership relevant to the community. Two examples of creative and innovative responses to challenging situations are offered in this section. The first shows solutions that have been critical to the survival of a number of communities in East Africa, and the second example from Greece illustrates how leadership strategies, unique services, and the use of technology to build community, promote collaboration and market their successes has brought significant benefit to their community, assuring the long term continuation of library services even in tough economic times.

In 2009 Queen’s University Belfast opened its new £50 million library with 2,000 reader places and housing some 1.5 million volumes. The background to the project is described, as are the main features of the new library building. Trends in 21st-century library design, including the growing importance of energy-efficiency measures, are outlined. The focus of the paper is sustainability as exemplified in the design of The McClay Library at Queen’s University. Sustainability procedures used during the construction process are briefly described as are the five key sustainability principles which informed the design of the library throughout. Finally, the approach to managing sustainability on a day-to-day basis post-occupancy, with particular reference to the Green Impact Scheme, is discussed. The Montserrat Abelló library is the most recent public library to be opened in the city of Barcelona. The library occupies a former textile plant built in 1924. The project gives new life to a symbolic building in the Les Corts neighbourhood and evokes its history. An industrial building is designed to be a self-contained complex operating independently within its environment. Its operation is the opposite of what is required of a public library, which should relate closely to its surroundings and its neighbourhood. The assignment of a new use to an industrial building in the city enables the structure to continue, despite its location. Rehabilitation and reuse should respect the building’s values and key features and ideally correct any shortcomings, without changing its essential character. Establishing a clear connection between the interior and the exterior was one of the major challenges of the project. The project was carried out with a sustainability and energy efficiency agenda including gaining BREEAM Certification.

Sustainability -- and the need to reduce humankind's impact on the earth -- is on people's minds more than ever. Whether it's changing eating habits or how we travel, people are being more mindful of how their actions contribute to the planet's health. And the local library is well positioned to not only support, but also actively contribute to efforts to create a brighter future for all. Governments and related agencies have weighed in on the need to reduce the impact humans are having on their home planet. One guiding doctrine is the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted in 2015 by all United Nations Member States. The agenda outlines a path for peace and prosperity for the future of the planet and those of us who live on it. The agenda specifies 17 Sustainable Development Goals, including eliminating poverty and hunger, improving education, and preserving natural resources such as water quality, oceans and forests. Libraries have a powerful role to play in the move toward achieving these 17 goals. According to the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), the network of at least 2.3 million library institutions has both a global reach and an innate understanding of local priorities.

4R 4U is the extension of a very successful project “Scary Scarecrow”, originally from the memory of children's literature. First R is a tribute to children’s writers but also to reading in the childhood. Second R is for reduce of fear of written words. New e-information formats and e-services have been developed to support academics in their scholarly communication and access to information. With ever-increasing prices of electronic journals, scholars and librarians have made an aggressive move toward the creation of a new model of information exchange-open access to scholarly communication and information. This paper discusses the participation of librarians in the new model and seeks an answer to the question of why many librarians have been reluctant to contribute to scholarly communication through an involvement in digital publishing. The paper describes the production process of the Electronic Green Journal, a tool for the communication of current environmental research, bibliographies, book reviews, and news about international information resources that are beneficial for building environmental literacy.

This study was conducted to develop and propose the evaluation indicators to evaluate the eco-friendliness of the library, when certified as the eco-friendly Green Libraries. To do this, we extracted the green library components through an analysis of the green library literatures and case studies, and surveyed the perceptions of the library staffs about the assessment factors. Finally, we developed the green library evaluation index with 11 evaluation areas, 31 evaluation items, and 135 evaluation indicators. The 11 evaluation areas are as follows; Land use and transportation, energy and environmental protection, materials and resources, water cycle management, maintenance management, ecological environment, the indoor environment, the library resources, the eco-education programs and campaigns, the staff and operations, and the computerization.

Purpose When confronted with a problem where the solution is not clear or obvious, a first step would be to search for more information, trying to make sense of the problem. The intention of this contribution is to make sense of the call for ``libraries to go green'', while at the same time to show the potential of explicitly considering information behaviour and the need to draw on the full spectrum of information literacy skills (e.g. recognising and expressing an information need, seeking, using, and disseminating information) to stimulate librarians' interest and confidence in taking on the challenge of going green and making a difference. Design/methodology/approach The column will be written against the background of research from information literacy, information behaviour, and research on sustainable and environmental friendly library and information (LIS) services. Findings Although rather a limited number, publications on ``going green'' and the ``paperless'' library/society address a variety of issues ranging from planning ``green'' library buildings, to assessing the experiences of LIS professionals in developing sustainable ``green libraries'', to information behaviour in using e--books in academic contexts. Considering the finding and use of information on ``going green'', from an information behaviour perspective, helps to bring many issues to consider in furthering research on ``going green'' to the front. Originality/value Although much has been published about information behaviour and information literacy, and although attempts of publishing on various issues of ``green'' libraries are noted, the author is not aware of other work aligning these issues.

Abstract: The article discusses the contribution of the librarian for Environmental Education, pointing out his/her importance as an educator while bringing not only theoretical knowledge but also influencing actions for people so they develop ecologically correct habits. As the librarian is considered one of the professionals who disseminate information, it is believed that he/she cannot stay out of these discussions. Librarians as citizens and professionals must also act in this area, working at his/her best to disseminate environmental information, create strategies, networks, projects and other actions to keep people aware of the problems and reduce the impact of humans on the environment. This research also shows that librarianship should and must relate to environmental education. This way, his/her work would help to generate critical thinking, acquire environmentally correct behaviors, and contribute to a sustainable development in the region.

Catalysed by the urgency of climate change, this chapter provides a multifaceted definition of sustainability as applied to libraries. Drawing from a range of international projects, the reader sees how dedication to sustainability action has become more central and widespread in the library profession worldwide. Successful examples are drawn from IFLA’s Green Library Award as well as other innovative programmes, services, buildings and projects based on increasing consciousness around environmental responsibility. Cultural factors are sensitively taken into consideration when defining success, recognising the variability of different countries’ access to resources.

The interconnectedness of our world has been highlighted for many of us over the past few years. Although countries and regions may have different governments, values, and characteristics, we all have the same basic human needs and share many of the same challenges. For me, this was on full view during my international travels representing ALA last year. When other library workers and I attended the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions' World Library and Information Congress (IFLA WLIC) in Dublin, Ireland, in July, we heard from Mary Robinson, the first female president of Ireland who now works as a climate activist. As library workers in the US, we are inspired by and inspiring to library workers and libraries across the world. Our professional values and standards set the model for work not just at ALA but also for libraries around the globe.

This paper presents a techno-economic analysis of hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES) to supply the electrical load requirements of the Central Library of Kırklareli University located in Kavaklı Campus, Kırklareli, Turkey. The standalone and grid connected HRES (Grid/PV/battery, wind/battery and PV/wind/battery etc.) considered in the analysis were comprised of different combinations of PV modules and wind turbines supplemented with battery storage. Meanwhile, wind and solar energy potential in Kırklareli is fairly appropriate for supplying energy requirements of some places with no high electricity load like libraries. In this study, the HOMER software is used as the assessment tool to determine the optimal configuration of HRES taking total net present cost (NPC) and cost of energy (CoE) into consideration. As a result, it is determined that the optimal system configuration of standalone hybrid system with the lowest total NPC consists of 40kW PV array, 10kW Wind turbine, 20kW power converter and 72 batteries and also that total NPC and CoE of the optimal configuration are estimated to be \\($228,330, \$\)0.334/kWh, respectively. Similarly, it is determined that the optimal system configuration of grid connected hybrid system with the lowest total NPC consists of 30kW Wind turbine, 100kW Grid and also that total NPC and CoE of the optimal configuration are estimated to be \\($137,979, \$\)0.185/kWh, respectively. When these configurations are compared considering CoE and total NPC it is clearly shown that Grid connected hybrid systems is more economical than standalone hybrid system. But some environmental effects (CO2, CO NOx and carbon tax etc.) are taken into consideration the standalone hybrid system must be preferred. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article looks at how librarians can make a difference, as libraries move toward environmental friendliness. While building a green library may represent the largest public statement any community can make to show its support for sustainability, several measures can be taken to move existing facilities in that direction. Information on the LEED-certified silver library in Fayetteville, Arkansas is presented. Numerous libraries have also moved beyond internal recycling to assuming a more public role in the battle to curb the effects of global warming.

E-book suppliers offer various ways to purchase e-books, such as Demand Driven Acquisition (PDA) models as well as different packages. Most often the package options include additional e-books that never were, nor will be, in demand in your Library. These additional e-books might not come with a great extra initial cost. However, they most probably will make an unnecessary carbon footprint. According to Landauer’s principle data processing will always require a certain minimal power expenditure. One way to make sure we acquire only e-books in demand is to handpick them, a method considered to be time consuming and costly. In this poster we use graphs and pictures to illustrate and evaluate the Humanities Library’s purchase pattern for e-books outside packages over the last 10 years. We compare statistics such as price, subject, access and different purchase options. Two different purchasing methods were used during these 10 years: EBL’s PDA-model (2009-2014) and acquisition from the GOBI Library Solution’s platform (2016-2019). In 2004, the University of Gothenburg became the first university in the world to be environmentally certified under both ISO14001 and EMAS. How can we incorporate environmental aspects into our future acquisition?

The chapter considers the potential of repurposing disused religious buildings for use as libraries and examines an exemplary model of library adaptive reuse in a cultural heritage context: La Capilla, the Biblioteca Satélite de Arquitectura y Diseño at Universidad de los Andes/University of the Andes (Uniandes) in Bogotá, Colombia. The author outlines the La Capilla project in detail, including the larger context of adaptive reuse in the Uniandes campus and in Bogotá. The architectural strategy used in the La Capilla conversion was an almost freestanding structural insertion placed inside an unaltered historic shell. The history of the Uniandes campus and the city of Bogotá is explored. Two other church to library conversion case studies are briefly examined to conclude that architectural intervention in culturally significant buildings can enhance public understanding of history while simultaneously serving library programmatic needs.

Greenpoint, New York, a historically working-class Polish immigrant community, sits at the confluence of the East River and Newtown Creek, at the northwest edge of Brooklyn. This neighborhood of more than 34,000 has also been home to decades of industrial pollution. The Greenpoint Library and Environmental Education Center, a branch of Brooklyn (N.Y.) Public Library (BPL), opened in fall 2020 to highlight and give testimony to Greenpoint's relationship with its natural surroundings and promote awareness of climate change and sustainability. Both a full-service library and a community hub for environmental awareness, activism, and education, it houses the Greenpoint Environmental History Project, a collection of oral interviews and personal items chronicling the ecological past of a neighborhood contaminated by industry. The goal of the project is that future generations may better understand the history of the area, its struggles, and its grassroots advocacy.

Libraries are essential for sustainable development. The agenda for the United Nations' 17 Sustainable Develop- ment Goals (SDGs) that guide the development efforts of countries around the world was adopted in September 2015 during the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). I attended the UNGA as part of a group of librarians that for several years advocated for access to information, culture, education and ICTs (Information \& Communication Technologies) on behalf of IFLA at the United Nations in New York to be included in the SDGs. Thanks to IFLA's global library team, librarians advocat- ing for the inclusion of access to information on the SDGs at country's capitals, we successfully secured the inclusion of access to information on Goal 16- Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, specifically on Target 16.10.

The article discusses the building of the Bei-tou Branch Library (BBL) in Taipei, Taiwan, as a green building. Green buildings, as defined by the article, are buildings which coexist with the environment, by having a low impact on the environment which surrounds them. Environmental goals which the government of Taiwan has in regards to green buildings are discussed. Demands which were made on the architects in regards to building the library, and aspects which the author feels should be taken into account when designing green buildings, are mentioned.

Berkeley Electronic Press Selected Works, Sustainability is a fast evolving movement in higher education demonstrated by a proliferation of academic programs and co-curricular initiative and projects. After a review of sustainability-related LibGuides (online resource guides) created by academic librarians, a survey was administered to their developers during the spring of 2011 and posted on library listservs. Librarians returned 112 survey responses which reflected active roles in the paradigm shift toward sustainability through the forging of partnerships across campus and development of teaching resources and events. Telephone interviews conducted with 24 of the respondents showed librarians' wide-ranging personal and professional interest in sustainability, and their initiatives to promote its cause, including creating resources, collections, exhibits and events; library instruction; co-teaching with faculty; serving on sustainability committees, and collaborating with sustainability faculty and staff. A case study of the engagement of University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries with campus sustainability initiatives as well as the author's professional development activities shows that librarians promote sustainability in numerous ways on their campuses and through professional associations. However, both the survey and the interviews suggest that librarians often lack contact or knowledge of work undertaken elsewhere. Moreover, as the needs of students and faculty studying sustainability increase, libraries should appoint librarians with special responsibilities in this field.

This paper reports on academic libraries' Community Engagement (CE) initiatives in South Africa and outline their potential to contribute to the actualisation of three Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 2, 3 and 13). The research approach adopted was qualitative using online interviews with 20 heads of libraries in South Africa and eight online focus group discussions with library staff as data collection methods. It was found that South African academic libraries' CE initiatives can be successfully mapped out against the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The results showed that through CE, academic libraries in South Africa play a role in addressing hunger, improving health and well-being and contributing to climate action, among other SDGs. CE, therefore, can play a role in SDGs that fall outside of academic libraries' traditional teaching, learning and research support role. These results will serve as a call for academic libraries to consider participating in CE in order to contribute to development areas that they do not normally contribute to directly. This study provides unique insights on the contribution of academic libraries to SDGs. As a recommendation, academic libraries should consider mapping their CE initiatives against the SDGs.

Sustainable thinking and going green are undoubtedly on the agenda worldwide. The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) adopted the United Nations Agenda 2030 to demonstrate the key role of libraries as engines for sustainable development. The purpose of this study is to motivate and encourage academic libraries to take a leading role in their communities to help achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of Agenda 2030 and to stimulate further research on the topic. This study identifies, for the first time, outstanding examples of sustainable libraries from all over the world. It focuses on academic libraries that took part in the IFLA Green Library Award competition or those that published their project as an SDG story on the Library Map of the World. The examples given depict how libraries and access to information address the demands across all SDGs. Tools such as a checklist, a short literature review and relevant websites complement the study. Academic libraries and librarians can learn by example and adopt strategies and solutions proven to be successful in other countries. By doing so, they can join a global movement to act as exemplars, educators, and enablers for sustainable development (IFLA, 2018).

Sustainable development in the 21st century is based on access to information and knowledge. Like their counterparts, African libraries have recognized the key role of libraries in achieving sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).The National Library of Uganda provides ICT training to female farmers to access weather forecasts, crop prices, and to set up online markets in their local languages. Nigerian Librarians developed a SDGs Action Group on Facebook to achieve SDGs. Similarly, public libraries in Botswana are actively engaged in achieving sustainable development goals. For example, supporting Goal 8, some public libraries provide basic ICT training to empower community so as to increase access to information for career and job opportunities leading to social and economic development. To support Goal 4: Quality education, some Public Libraries provide homework assistance to children to build strong educational foundation. To address Goal 5, Gender Equality, some public libraries in Botswana organize gender related activities to support girls and women. The aim of this paper is to share Botswana public libraries' initiatives toward sustainable development. The data for this paper was collected through interviews with the librarians, who are actively involved in SDGs and observations.

The green library concept has attracted a lot of interest worldwide, especially in public and academic libraries all aiming to provide inspiring library services in a conducive and user-friendly environment. The greening initiative at the Kenya National Library Service (KNLS) Nakuru branch was ranked among the top five applications for the IFLA Green Library Award competition 2017. The green library concept is slowly gaining momentum and recognition in Kenya, as public institutions such as universities and public/community libraries endeavour to construct libraries that meet our next generation of users’ behaviour and expectations. A library building plan must include an environmental impact statement to ensure a low carbon footprint and that improved library services are offered efficiently and effectively (Druaipandi 2016). This paper presents the green library initiatives undertaken by KNLS Nakuru branch in line with the green library movement. These initiatives include the sustainable library building and reading tree initiative in some public primary schools which are members of the library book clubs within Nakuru County. The paper defines the green library/ sustainable library building concept by giving examples and expanding on the reading tree concept as embraced by the Nakuru library. It is hoped that other libraries will embrace the idea and help address environmental problems such as climate change, global warming and air pollution that have adversely affected Kenya and the wider world.

Library services to children and teens have been barely existent in Zambia, even though young people account for nearly 70% of the country’s population. Undergraduate and master’s level LIS education is offered at the University of Zambia, but the programs include no courses on children or youth services. Public libraries in the nation have been poorly supported and not seen to be playing an important role in the lives of its citizens. Libraries do not have acquisitions budgets because of the misperception that book donation programs can provide needed materials, and thus the librarians do not perform the core library activities and functions of defining user needs, collection development, selection and acquisition of materials. Technology and innovation have also evaded the public library sector in Zambia. The poster will show how Lubuto Library Partners (LLP) has collaborated with Zambia’s library community and stakeholders for over a decade to address these issues and, in partnership with Government and the Zambia Library Service, create dynamic, impactful, heavily used and highly visible libraries serving children and youth. Photos and data will illustrate LLP innovations, their enthusiastic acceptance by society and the library community, and the role the libraries play in helping Zambia achieve the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals.

Libraries have been presented with an unprecedented opportunity to make a contribution to the development agendas, principally the United Nations (UN) 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Libraries need to talk about the valuable work they are doing in their communities by making use of activities, data/ statistics, and stories, to relate to the SDGs and to align themselves with national development plans. Most South Africans still do not have adequate access to libraries or information services. Communities in rural parts of the country have been largely excluded from any meaningful development and suffer from a lack of infrastructure. Illiteracy, unemployment, health care, economic development and education remain major national challenges. Having access to libraries and information could make all the difference to the quality of lives and circumstances for all people. Libraries have a critical role to play in the lives of information deprived communities. Not only do libraries nurture and grow literacy, but also they are better positioned to serve community development and enhance social cohesion.

In view of the increased importance of the Sustainable Development Goals and the limited number of public libraries in Jordan, it is important to investigate the role and practices of academic libraries in promoting knowledge and skills to support the Sustainable Development Goals in Jordan. It is also important to explore the challenges that might hinder the accomplishment of the Sustainable Development Goals. The results of this study support the fact that academic libraries can significantly contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (M = 3.53) by providing access to relevant and up-to-date information (M = 4.16) and giving training on information literacy (M = 4.03). Access to information contributes to the quality of life of society (M = 4.41). This article provides insights for academic librarians and decision-makers into disseminating measures for promoting knowledge and skills related to the Sustainable Development Goals among students and the public community in Jordan. The study recommends some relevant strategies, such as the collaboration of academic libraries with governmental and health institutions to support the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals in Jordan.

Faire de sa bibliothèque un pilier pour le développement durable local : un exemple d’advocacy en France. Point d'accès à l’information (comme le rappelle la Déclaration de Lyon (2014), les 65000 bibliothèques et centres de documentation français (source : public libraries 2020) sont des acteurs essentiels du développement durable. Leurs missions leur permettent de répondre à tous les objectifs de développement durable de l’Agenda 2030 de l’ONU. Cependant, en être convaincu ne suffit pas, en avoir la preuve chaque jour au sein de nos établissements ne suffit pas non plus. Il convient de savoir le dire, le montrer et le prouver aussi bien auprès des élus et des publics que des bibliothécaires eux-mêmes. C’est dans cet objectif que l’IFLA a mis en place le programme IAP (international advocacy programme), grâce auquel deux bibliothécaires français ont été formés pour développer des projets d’advocacy basés sur l’Agenda 2030 dans le contexte français. Ce poster vise à présenter les actions menées suite à cette formation pour s’organiser, collecter des données, sensibiliser les bibliothécaires, produire des contenus et mener des premières actions de lobbying et d’advocacy. Le poster montrera l’importance de s’organiser en un groupe de travail efficace, capable d’avoir une audience nationale et de mettre en place un programme d’action pour les années à venir ; en d’autres termes une bonne illustration de l’objectif 17 de l’Agenda 2030. Une bonne organisation ne peut avancer sans matériel sur quoi baser son travail. Aussi, l’étape suivante aura été la collecte d’exemples et d’histoires, pour montrer la participation active des bibliothèques envers tous les objectifs de l’Agenda 2030. Dotés de témoignages, nous avons accompagné nos collègues à la maîtrise d’un discours de plaidoyer sur les bibliothèques actrices du développement durable. Pour cela, nous avons fait des formations et créé un serious game collaboratif. La facilité à défendre les bibliothèques à l’oral n’épargne pas un travail sur les documents qui peuvent être fournis aux élus et décideurs. Aussi, le groupe de travail a créé une base de données, un site web et un fil d’actualités, ainsi qu’une brochure de témoignages d’actions françaises menées pour chacun des objectifs de l’Agenda 2030. Ainsi prêts, nous avons mis en pratique nos acquis dans trois situations de lobbying à Genève (ONU), à New York (Ambassades auprès de l’ONU) et à Bruxelles (Parlement Européen). Ces premières expériences nous ont permis de faire un petit guide pour mieux se préparer à ces rencontres parfois courtes avec les décideurs. Le travail n’est pas fini. Il nous reste encore des outils de sensibilisation (vidéo) à développer, des contacts à consolider (avec une carte de voeux), des formations à assurer (au niveau francophone), etc. Ce poster présente donc un point d’étape de l’action menée pendant deux années pour sensibiliser les professionnels de l’information français à l’Agenda 2030 et à l’expression de leur rôle dans la réalisation de ses 17 objectifs.

Green information technologies and systems refer to initiatives and programs that directly or indirectly address environmental sustainability in organizations. Although practitioners have begun to focus on `Green IT', there is little research in this area. To set the stage for this research, we develop a multilevel research framework to guide future research. To do so, we review the existing green information technology and systems literature, and also draw more broadly from research that addresses environmental sustainability in the management, environmental psychology, and social marketing domains. From this review, we identify important research gaps and present a set of propositions to guide future research.

Nowadays we use information retrieval systems and services as part of our many day-to-day activities ranging from a web and database search to searching for various digital libraries, audio and video collections/services, and so on. However, IR systems and services make extensive use of ICT (information and communication technologies) and increasing use of ICT can significantly increase greenhouse gas (GHG, a term used to denote emission of harmful gases in the atmosphere) emissions. Sustainable development, and more importantly environmental sustainability, has become a major area of concern of various national and international bodies and as a result various initiatives and measures are being proposed for reducing the environmental impact of industries, businesses, governments and institutions. Research also shows that appropriate use of ICT can reduce the overall GHG emissions of a business, product or service. Green IT and cloud computing can play a key role in reducing the environmental impact of ICT. This paper proposes the concept of Green IR systems and services that can play a key role in reducing the overall environmental impact of various ICT-based services in education and research, business, government, etc., that are increasingly being reliant on access and use of digital information. However, to date there has not been any systematic research towards building Green IR systems and services. This paper points out the major challenges in building Green IR systems and services, and two different methods are proposed for estimating the energy consumption, and the corresponding GHG emissions, of an IR system or service. This paper also proposes the four key enablers of a Green IR viz. Standardize, Share, Reuse and Green behavior. Further research required to achieve these for building Green IR systems and services are also mentioned.

The purpose of this study is to describe the trends and contents of literature in green library and to suggest the research direction on green library. Earlier studies focus on the green library architecture and necessity, after then green library management studies have proliferated. Green library architecture studies have emphasized on 'energy and atmosphere' and 'indoor environmental quality' based upon 5 categories of LEED evaluation system. Green library management studies have focused on library resources recycling and utilizing energy through effective management of library collection. Based on the analysis of literature, five research directions are suggested, such as the number of libraries in an area, library shelf position and space, library space program, collection ratio for library storage, and user studies.

This study aims to explore the provision of web-based sources and services through the websites of university libraries in India. The present study adopted a content analysis method for examining various web-based library services and web-based sources provided through the university library websites with a checklist. A total of 50 top-ranked Indian universities were listed from the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranking list for the year 2020 in the category university. From these universities to be included as a sample for the present study; each university must have an independent library website. Secondly, the university library should be offering web-based library services and resources through the library website. Based on these criteria, 42 library websites were shortlisted as a sample for this study. The study found that majority of the libraries were offering traditional library services such as referral service, and library catalogue in a web-based environment more extensively compared to innovative and modern present-day services like library application (App), Instant Messaging (IM), and virtual library tours. Moreover, libraries are yet to explore the full potential of social media services and web 2.0 tools. A majority of the library websites were lagging in the provision of these services. It is suggested that libraries should make efforts to provide social media services extensively as the current generation are the predominant users of social media; hence it is evident on the libraries' part to make efforts to reach out to a wide population of their library users. This research is the first study of its kind highlighting the significance of university library websites in the provision of web-based services and sources for sustainability, and exploring the role of academic libraries in the promotion of sustainable development by processes like collection development on sustainable development themes, developing information literacy skills, spreading awareness, and organizing events on sustainable development and related areas.

Within the framework of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, which includes 17 sustainable development goals for a better world, a plan has been drawn up for the participation of all countries, with their various institutions, in their implementation, meaning that everyone, including libraries, has a role in achieving these goals. The evolution of libraries through three stages –modernization, automation and digitization- is analysed. A formula is pre-sented to evaluate the importance of libraries to our society, and it is applied both retrospectively and futuristically, extra-polating a 2030 scenario. Purpose This study aims to investigate the sustainable development goals (SDGs) awareness of public librarians, their perceived understanding of public libraries to achieve United Nation Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs) and identify the challenges affect the library adoption to SDGs. Design/methodology/approach In this study, a quantitative survey method was used to collect responses. The study population was all head of public libraries in Bangladesh. Seventy-one personalized individual e-mails with a link to a Web-based questionnaire were sent out to the public librarians (head of public libraries) inviting them to participate in this study. Fifty-nine responded to the survey, which was 83.09% of all population. Findings The findings revealed that public librarians working in different public libraries were generally aware of UNSDGs. The perceived understanding on the role of public libraries to achieve SDGs varies from SDG#1 to SDG1#7. However, most of the librarians' responses ranked well in line with SDGs#1, #2, #3, #4 and #17, and they believed that their public libraries are doing well on some of these goals. Out of 17 SDGs, public libraries are working well on 7 goals. Lack of SDG-related activities, awareness, funds, implementation plan and unwillingness of the policymakers are challenges identified in this study. Originality/value There are not many studies on public libraries in Bangladesh, and the research areas are not diverse. There are only few studies in this area, and there is a need for different kinds of studies to reach a better overview and understanding when developing public library services to support SDGs. This could serve as the basis for a deeper study.

This paper examines the thermal condition of occupants and the risk of overheating in two award winning sustainable public libraries in Auckland region of New Zealand through long term environmental monitoring of the building performance and occupants’ survey. The survey was performed on eight staff of the library who have occupied the buildings for more than two years. The data were further contrasted with the risk of overheating assessment which were based on thermal comfort design parameters for free-running buildings. The standards that define the risk of overheating used in this study are CIBSE A 2006 standard the British Standard EN 1525; the TM52 CIBSE; and Building Bulleting 101 (BB101). The results demonstrate that none of the libraries are at the risk of overheating during the summer season. However, the building occupants claimed that in certain periods, the buildings can get overheated, even though, adaptive comfort criteria was used to design these libraries. The discrepancies between the overheating risk methods and the surveys can be further explained by the fact that none of the overheating methods considered the effects of the water content in the air. Such parameter is proven to have an effect on the capacity of the body to reduce its own temperature though the evaporative effect in the skin. Therefore, a standard that takes into account the humidity ratio such as the ASHRAE 55 might shed light to understand the thermal comfort responses of the occupants. The study provides insight into the socio-technical issues in overheating risk assessment in the context of public libraries in temperate climates.

Zusammenfassung: Seit Juli 2020 bietet die Stadtbibliothek Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg ein neues Outreach-Angebot: In den wärmeren Monaten des Jahres tourt das BiboBike durch die Grünflächen des Berliner Bezirks. Sieben Hängematten um ein Bücherregal laden zum Lesen, Spielen und Entspannen im Grünen ein. Hinter der Leseinsel verbirgt sich die mobile Bibliotheksstation, die als E-Bike mit Anhänger durch die Straßen fährt und sich am gewünschten Standort im Handumdrehen aufbauen lässt. Abstract: Since July 2020, the Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg public library has been offering a new outreach service: during the warmer months of the year, the BiboBike tours the green spaces of the Berlin district. Seven hammocks around a bookshelf invite visitors to read, play, and relax in the park. This vacation-like island is a mobile library station, which travels through the streets as an e-bike with trailer and can be set up at the desired location in no time at all.

Die Walserbibliotheken im Biosphärenpark Großes Walsertal zeigen, wie Umweltfragen, Ökologie und nachhaltiges Leben mit gezielten Aktionen zum Thema und zur Aufgabe gemacht werden können. Im Großen Walsertal gibt es in allen sechs Gemeinden eine Bibliothek. Einzigartig ist die Verknüpfung der eigenständigen Bibliotheken im Netzwerk Walserbibliothek Großes Walsertal. Über 30.000 Medien stehen den 3.400 EinwohnerInnen in den Walserbibliotheken zur Verfügung. Zahlreiche Veranstaltungen werden jedes Jahr angeboten. Leben im Biosphärenpark bedeutet, in einer außergewöhnlichen Natur- und Kulturlandschaft zu leben, diese nachhaltig zu bewirtschaften und im Einklang mit der Natur Lebensräume weiterzuentwickeln. Deshalb sind auch die Büchereien aufgefordert, aktiv an Entwicklungsprozessen teilzunehmen und das Umweltbewusstsein zu fördern.

Dieser Beitrag gibt einen kurzen Überblick über die Geschichte des nachhaltigen Bauens in der Schweiz. Der Diskurs zu einer nachhaltigen Entwicklung, zu einer nachhaltigen Gesellschaft setzte in der Schweiz wie anderswo als Folge von internationalen Entwicklungen und Anstößen ein (Club of Rome, Kyoto-Protokoll etc.). In der Schweiz entwickelte sich die Vision der 2000-Watt-Gesellschaft. Dabei handelt es sich um einen holistischen Ansatz, der nebst dem Gebäudebereich weitere Handlungsfelder zum bewussten und schonenden Umgang mit den Energieressourcen beinhaltet (Mobilität, Raumplanung, Konsum etc.). Der Beitrag fokussiert jedoch auf die Entwicklung von Standards im Gebäudebereich und zeigt, wie diese Standards und energetische Vorschriften in drei Bibliotheksbauprojekten konkret umgesetzt wurden. This article gives a short overview of the history of sustainable building in Switzerland. The discourse on sustainable development and a sustainable society started in Switzerland like elsewhere as a consequence of international developments and impetus (Club of Rome, Kyoto Protocol etc.). In Switzerland the vision of a so-called “2000-Watt Society” evolved. This is a holistic approach which involved – besides building issues – more fields of activity regarding the sensible and respectful handling of energy resources (mobility, city and regional planning, consumption etc.). The paper focuses on the development of building standards and shows how these standards and energy directives were realized in three different library building projects.

Dirk Wissen im Gespräch mit der Berliner Klimaaktivistin und "Fridays for Future"-Pressesprecherin Clara Duvigneau, u.a. zur Rolle von Bibliotheken bei der Umwelt- und Klimabildung und zur Vorbildfunktion von Bibliotheken beim Umgang mit der Klimakrise. Die 2002 in Berlin geborene Klimaaktivistin Clara Duvigneau studiert derzeit an der TU Berlin im Fach Ökologie und Umweltplanung. Seit Herbst 2020 engagiert sie sich ehrenamtlich für »Fridays for Future«, dessen Berliner Pressesprecherin sie seit August 2021 ist. Begonnen hat ihr Engagement für diese Bewegung über die Studierendeninitiative der TU Berlin. Im Sommer 2021 organisierte sie das Klimagerechtigkeitscamp mit, das etwa drei Monate neben dem »Haus der Kulturen der Welt« unter dem Motto »#WirBleibenBisIhrHandelt!« bestand. Zuletzt stand sie am 24. September 2021 beim Globalen Klimastreik vor 100 000 Demonstrantinnen und Demonstranten moderierend auf der Bühne. Auf den globalen Klimastreiks vom 22. Oktober 2021 und am 25. März 2022 hat sie Fridays for Future als Pressesprecherin repräsentiert.

Durch die 2015 beschlossene UN-Agenda 2030 mit ihren Zielen für eine nachhaltige globale Entwick-lung, aber auch durch den Nationalen Aktionsplan Bildung für eine nachhaltige Entwicklung und die Neuauflage der Deutschen Nachhaltigkeitsstrategie der Bundesregierung sind auch die Bibliotheken als Bildungseinrichtungen gefordert, ihren Beitrag zur Erreichung der dort formulierten Ziele zu leis-ten. In einem Hands-on Lab des Bibliothekartages sollten praktische Erfahrungen vermittelt werden, wie Bibliotheken zur nachhaltigen Entwicklung beitragen können. Impulsreferate1 behandelten die UN-Agenda 2030 und die Rolle der Bibliotheken, die Bibliothek als Plattform für Community Buil-ding, Urban Gardening in der Bibliothek. Darüber hinaus wurde das 2018 neugegründete Netzwerk Grüne Bibliothek vorgestellt. Anschließend wurden in einem World-Café eigene Erfahrungen und praktische Wege zur Umsetzung diskutiert.

Der Lernort Bibliothek ist bedeutsam für das Lernen, die Lehre und die Forschung. Neben der Infrastruktur und dem Raummobiliar können bewegungsfördernde Geräte neue Nutzungsmöglichkeiten am Lernort schaffen. Lernen, Lesen und Studieren finden normalerweise im Sitzen statt. Die literaturbasierte Arbeit „Bewegung fördert Lernen“ geht der Frage nach, welche bewegungsfördernden Geräte für den Lernort möglich sind und welche Nutzungsmöglichkeiten sich daraus ergeben. Ob Bibliotheksneubau oder die Umgestaltung des Lernorts ohne bauliche Veränderungen: verschiedene Geräte zu Bewegung und/oder gleichzeitigem Studieren können das Lernen stimulieren und die Konzentration erhöhen. Mit diesen Nutzungsangeboten können Bibliotheken aktiv einen Beitrag gegen die „sitzende Gesellschaft“ leisten und im besten Fall ein Alleinstellungsmerkmal für ihre Institution erzielen. Praxisbeispiele aus dem anglo-amerikanischen Raum überzeugen mit Studien und Meinungsbildern, dass bewegungsfördernde Geräte am Lernort geschätzt und dauerhaft genutzt werden. Am konkreten Beispiel einer vierwöchigen Teststellung eines stromerzeugenden Rads im Lesesaal der Philologischen Bibliothek der Freien Universität Berlin werden notwendige Vorüberlegungen, Maßnahmen und Handlungsweisen dargestellt, um dieses Nutzungsangebot realisieren zu können.

Beim fünften Bib Talk spricht der Direktor der Stadtbücherei Bochum mit der langjährigen Dozentin und Bibliothekarin Dr. Petra Hauke. Frau Hauke hat die "Green Library" nach Deutschland geholt. Sie ist Vorreiterin in Sachen Nachhaltigkeit und Bibliotheken. In Berlin am Institut für Bibliotheks- und Informations­wissen­schaft der Humboldt Universität führte sie mit Studierenden der Bibliothekswissenschaften jährlich das Projekt: "Von der Idee zum Buch - Praktische Durchführung eines Publikationsprojektes" durch. Resumo: A pesquisa parte do pressuposto de que as bibliotecas públicas, municipais e estaduais no Brasil, em função de sua condição e de sua missão, devem ser as primeiras a adotarem princípios e práticas de sustentabilidade, com vistas a se constituírem como referências em equipamentos culturais verdes no país. Dessa forma, a presente pesquisa tem como objetivo refletir e discutir o conceito de informação ambiental e de biblioteca verde e sustentável, assim como identificar bibliotecas públicas certificadas no país, visando subsidiar a construção de políticas públicas nesta área. Apresenta os esforços do governo federal na gestão da informação ambiental e a ausência de estímulos para a adoção de práticas sustentáveis e certificação das bibliotecas que recebem investimentos públicos. Aponta passos para a certificação nas construções, design, arquitetura, gestão de recursos naturais e ambientais e educação ambiental em bibliotecas, bem como diretrizes para subsidiar a elaboração de políticas culturais e estimular os governos locais a adotarem princípios e práticas de sustentabilidade nas bibliotecas públicas brasileiras. Conclui que os investimentos governamentais na construção e modernização de bibliotecas públicas devem prever a adoção de princípios de sustentabilidade em seus prédios, serviços e práticas com o objetivo de incidir positivamente no desenvolvimento sustentável de sua região. Abstract The research assumes that public, state and municipal libraries in Brazil, due to its condition and its mission should be the first to adopt sustainability principles and practices in order to become a reference in green cultural equipment in the country. It aims to reflect and discuss the concept of environmental information and green and sustainable library, as well as identify certified public libraries in the country in order to support the construction of public policies in this area. It shows the efforts of the federal government in the management of environmental information, and the lack of incentives for the adoption of sustainable practices and certification of libraries that receive public investments. Points out steps for certification in construction, design, architecture, management of natural and environmental resources, and environmental education in libraries and guidelines to support the development of cultural policies and encourage local governments to adopt sustainability principles and practices in Brazilian public libraries. It concludes that government investments in construction and modernization of public libraries shall consider the adoption of sustainability principles in their buildings, services and practices with in order to have a positive impact on the sustainable development of their region.

Certo, per contribuire al nuovo welfare Tra le molte tendenze in atto nel mondo globalizzato, una delle più evidenti è lo straordinario sviluppo delle nuove tecnologie, che ha come conseguenza più o meno volontaria la polarizzazione fra i pochi che sono in grado di governare e manipolare tali tecnologie e i molti che non possono fare altro che applicarle pedissequamente, riducendosi a una sorta di "robot'' umani. Per questo una nuova concezione del welfare non può ignorare questa potenziale massa di "robotizzati'', ma deve fare in modo che possano anch'essi acquisire le competenze necessarie per incidere attivamente sulla realtà. Su questo terreno si apre per le biblioteche (in quanto presidi culturali) e per i bibliotecari (in quanto operatori della conoscenza) un ampio ventaglio di possibilità di intervento, a patto che abbiano il coraggio di varcare il confine che (ancora) separa il tradizionale modello di biblioteconomia da quello nuovo. Social librarianship for the new welfare Mongst the most recognizable trends of our globalized world there is the extraordinary technological development. One of its more or less intentional side effects is the polarization between the few able to manage and control technology, and the many who can't do anything but accept and adopt it. A new idea of welfare can't ignore this potential multitude of passive and defenseless individuals: on the contrary, it has to provide them with the skills and competences essential for leading change and innovation. This can be a rich and productive ground for libraries and librarians, who can work as knowledge management agents provided that they are not afraid to cross the line between a traditional and a new idea of librarianship.

Bibliotheken der Dinge gewinnen in der Praxis zunehmend an Bedeutung für Öffentliche Bibliotheken. In der bibliothekarischen Fachliteratur und -community wird das Thema bislang nur in Ansätzen, aber kontrovers diskutiert. Das Ziel der vorliegenden Bachelorarbeit ist es, das Themenfeld Bibliothek der Dinge in Fokussierung auf Öffentliche Bibliotheken in Deutschland zu erkunden. Forschungsleitend ist dabei die Frage, ob und inwieweit Bibliotheken der Dinge mit dem Auftrag und Selbstverständnis der Öffentlichen Bibliotheken vereinbar sind. Mittels Desk Research wird zunächst eine Erhebung zur Anzahl und Art der Bibliotheken der Dinge in Öffentlichen Bibliotheken in Deutschland vorgenommen. Außerdem werden zur Beantwortung der Forschungsfrage Expert:inneninterviews durchgeführt. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass mit entsprechen- der gesamtkonzeptioneller Ausrichtung Bibliotheken der Dinge anschlussfähig sind an die Öffentliche Bibliothek als Plattform, Knotenpunkt der Kommune, Dritter Ort und (aktiver) Erlebnis- und Inspirationsraum. Öffentliche Bibliotheken können mit Bibliotheken der Dinge zur Erneuerung und Fortschreibung ihres ursprünglichen sozialen Auftrags beitragen und sich als ökologisch nachhaltige Einrichtung weiter profilieren. Als vorübergehende Modeerscheinung könnten sich Bibliotheken der Dinge in Öffentlichen Bibliotheken dann erweisen, wenn sie ohne ein Gesamtkonzept etabliert werden.

Als niederschwellig zugängliche Einrichtungen, in denen Wissen, Information und Infrastruktur geteilt und langfristig sowie konsumfrei für alle zur Verfügung gestellt wird, leisten Bibliotheken einen wichtigen Beitrag zu allen 17 Nachhaltigkeitszielen. Darüber hinaus setzen sich immer mehr Bibliotheken proaktiv für das Thema ein -- sei es durch die Bereitstellung von Informationsmaterial, die thematische Erweiterung ihres Medienbestandes, oder durch Diskussionsrunden und Workshops zum Thema Nachhaltigkeit. Als wichtige Bildungs- und Kultureinrichtungen müssen Bibliotheken bei der Umsetzung der Agenda 2030 der UN deshalb dringend strategisch eingebunden werden. Sie müssen von Politik und Verwaltung gehört und genutzt werden, damit eine engere Verzahnung mit anderen Kultur- und Bildungseinrichtungen gelingen kann. Aber wie wird die Agenda 2030 auf nationaler und lokaler Ebene eigentlich umgesetzt? Welche Möglichkeiten bietet das für Bibliotheken? Und wie können sie sich bei Politik und Verwaltung Gehör verschaffen?

Bibliotheken sind als breitenwirksame Kultur- und Bildungseinrichtungen relevante Akteure für die Erfüllung der UN-Agenda-Ziele. Ihr Kernauftrag, der Bevölkerung einen freien Zugang zu Informationen zu gewährleisten und zu vermitteln, ist eng mit den Agenda-Zielen verknüpft. Sie tragen aufgrund ihres Auftrags als Informations- und Wissensvermittler per se mit ihren Angeboten zur Erfüllung der Nachhaltigkeitsziele bei. Ob durch Vorlesestunde eines Bilderbuchs zum Thema ‚sauberes Wasser‘ für Kleinkinder, durch Handy-Seniorenkurse, um diesen Informationszugang zu erlernen, eine Diskussionsveranstaltung oder Ausstellung zum Thema Gleichberechtigung oder durch Einführung in die Datenbankrecherche für Studierende und Fachinformationsdienste für Wissenschaftler – alle diese täglichen Arbeiten aus dem breiten Bibliotheksangebot tragen zu der Erfüllung der 17 Ziele bei. Viele Bibliotheken engagieren sich über Informationsveranstaltungen, Poster, Medienzusammenstellungen darin, die Agenda 2030 selbst, die Bedeutung ihrer Umsetzung und das Mitwirken eines Jeden für die gemeinsame Zielerfüllung zu vermitteln. Als öffentliche Einrichtung ist es Auftrag und gesellschaftliche Verantwortung von Bibliotheken, Informationen weiterzugeben und Bibliotheksnutzende in die Lage zu versetzen, sich anhand der Informationen selbst mit dem Thema zu beschäftigen. Bibliotheken können im Kontext dieses aktuell so relevanten gesellschaftlichen Themas der Agenda 2030 ihre eigene Sichtbarkeit erhöhen und somit ihren Stellenwert in der Gesellschaft unterstreichen. Dies tun sie, in dem sie sich bei der nationalen und weltweiten Aufgabe der Zielerfüllung als kompetente, professionelle und zuverlässige Partner anbieten mit einem funktionierenden und engmaschigen Netz an Standorten.

Ökologische Nachhaltigkeit ist im aktuellen umfassenden Weltzukunftsplan der UN, genannt Agenda 2030, ein Aspekt unter vielen, in Zeiten des Klimawandels aber ein ganz entscheidender. Im eigenen Umfeld macht heute der aufgeklärte Bürger und umweltbewusste Konsument viel, von der Mülltrennung bis zur planvollen Reduzierung der persönlichen CO2-Bilanz, aber was können wir an unserem Arbeitsplatz und was kann die Bibliothek als Institution tun, um einen sinnvollen Beitrag zur ökologischen Neuausrichtung unserer Gesellschaft zu leisten? Ökologische Nachhaltigkeit wurde viel zu lange lediglich als Aufgabe im Bereich des energieeffizienten Bibliotheksbaus, der Klimatisierung oder der energiesparenden Beleuchtung gesehen, alles Themen, auf die die Bibliotheksmitarbeiter, ja häufig selbst die Bibliotheksleitungen wenig Einflussmöglichkeiten haben.

Der bibliothekarische Weltverband IFLA engagiert sich auf globaler Ebene für bibliotheks- und informationspolitische Themen. Im Rahmen dieser advocacy ist es der IFLA gelungen, in die Verhandlungen der Vereinten Nationen zur glqqAgenda 2030 für nachhaltige Entwicklunggrqq ihre Positionen einzubringen. Innerhalb der hier definierten nachhaltigen Entwicklungsziele wurde unter Ziel 16.10 glqqZugang zur Information gewährleistengrqq aufgenommen, die Bedeutung des Zugangs zur Information für die Erreichung aller 17 nachhaltigen Entwicklungsziele wurde herausgestellt und Bibliotheken als Partner zur Erreichung der Ziele bekannt gemacht. Jetzt haben weltweit die Bibliotheksverbände, Einrichtungen und einzelne Bibliotheken die Chance, ihren Beitrag zur Erreichung der Ziele zu leisten. Der Artikel enthält ein Interview mit dem Direktor Policy & Advocacy der IFLA, Stuart Hamilton, der die Verhandlungen für die Agenda 2030 von Anfang an aktiv begleitet hat.

Résumé: Toits verts, systèmes géothermiques, matériaux durables, recyclage et réutilisation sont des termes qui viennent spontanément à l'esprit lorsqu'il est question de développement durable. Mais que signifie véritablement ce concept ? Comment se manifeste-t-il, concrètement, dans notre environnement, dans nos habitudes de vie ? L'écosystème qu'est la bibliothèque laisse de plus en plus de place aux préceptes du développement durable, par sa nature citoyenne et sa mission de partage du savoir, mais aussi d'inspiration et d'idées nouvelles. Autant au Québec qu'à l'international, divers projets de bibliothèques vertes, axées sur les besoins et le développement de leur communauté, abondent et se démarquent, laissant place à un discours nouveau, où s'entremêlent harmonieusement les considérations et impératifs actuels, sans compromis quant aux besoins des générations futures. Le présent texte reprend des éléments du travail réalisé dans le cadre du cours SCI6372 -- Aspects internationaux et comparés de l'information donné à l'été 2016 par Réjean Savard (qui a fait suite au voyage d'études organisé par l'EBSI en Allemagne, à Prague et à Strasbourg à l'été 2016) et propose un survol des initiatives de quelques bibliothèques dans le monde et invite à réfléchir au rôle de la bibliothèque verte. Abstract: Green roofs, geothermal systems, sustainable materials, recycling and reuse are words that spontaneously come to mind when it comes to sustainable development. But what does this concept really mean? How does it manifest itself, concretely, in our environment, in our life habits? The library ecosystem is increasingly giving way to the precepts of sustainable development, by its civic nature and its mission to share knowledge, but also by its inspirational nature and with new ideas. In Québec and internationally, various green library projects that are focused on the needs and development of the communities they serve are plentiful and distinctive, giving rise to a new discourse that harmoniously interweaves existing considerations and imperatives without compromising the needs of future generations. The following article summarises the principal components of a project undertaken during a summer course taught by Réjean Savard, namely SCI6372 -- Aspects internationaux et comparés de l'information. It is the result of a field trip organised by the École de bibliothéconomie et des sciences de l'information (EBSI) in Germany, Prague and Strasbourg during the summer of 2016. It provides an overview of the initiatives of some libraries around the world, and invites us to reflect on the role of the green library.

Zusammenfassung: Die Sächsische Landesfachstelle für Bibliotheken nimmt sich im 106. Jahr ihres Bestehens des Themas Nachhaltigkeit an. 2020 startete sie ein Kooperationsprojekt zur Einführung von Bildung für nachhaltige Entwicklung (BNE) im öffentlichen Bibliothekswesen. Zumeist haben wir mit Renovierungen, Sanierungen, Umbauvorhaben, Erweiterungen, Nachnutzungen und ähnlichen Vorhaben zu tun. Mit dem glücklicherweise wachsenden Nachhaltigkeitsbewusstsein geht auch eine nachvollziehbare Skepsis gegenüber Neubauten einher. What do academic librarians and fashion designers have in common? As designers produce a good---clothing---and librarians provide a service, it may seem like the two share no similarities. However, in recent years, both professions have been asked to do more with less. Designers are tasked with churning out clothing collections at a record rate while academic librarians have had to maintain and in some cases increase their level of service in the face of steadily decreasing budgets. One response to this relentless cycle in the fashion world is the development of slow fashion, a designer-oriented process that prioritizes producing fewer collections of clothing using materials that have less of an environmental impact. For libraries to respond to increasing demands, slow collection development is proposed and applied to building fashion resource collections in academic libraries.

September 29, 2022: Brentwood Public Library in Brentwood, New York has been certified as a ``Sustainable Library'' through the Sustainable Libraries Initiative's award-winning Sustainable Library Certification Program. This innovative program guides libraries through a step-by-step process to infuse Triple Bottom Line sustainable decision-making into their library's policies and practices. Brentwood Public Library is the thirteenth library to earn this designation and the eighth in the Suffolk Cooperative Library System (SCLS).

Bringing environmental awareness of public libraries to the 2020s was a Finnish national project, which focused on the environmental awareness of libraries. The project was the largest research, education, and development project in the library sector on this subject so far and funded by the Ministry of Culture and Education. The project was led by Helsinki City Library but in addition 7 city libraires across the country participated. During the project, new information was obtained through a survey and carbon footprint measurements of libraries. Also, the project outlined what is meant by the carbon handprint of libraries and how libraries can meet the UN SDGs. In addition, three webinars on environmental issues were organized and Green Library pages and social media groups were established.

Many communities and their residents, especially in the rural areas still live in obscure environments where under service and exclusion prevent them from participating in decisions that concern their lives. These are citizens who have rights to functional existence, good governance and information literacy. The project of “Voice to the people” sampled 32 pilot communities in South East Nigeria for information awareness creation where voice was given to the poor and marginalized. The librarian in the beneficial organization with the Project Team executed baseline studies, identified the community stakeholders, leaders of all communities’ groups for engagement and sensitization. This Team became involved with communities’ events and programs, building their capacities in advocacies, charter of demands and work plans for invited spaces to participate and contribute in nation building. Spaces were created for women inclusion, youths and people with disabilities (PWDs) in order to build strong sustainable communities. There were institutionalizations of Town Hall meetings, invited spaces for constituency dialogues with community representatives in village squares. Communities started driving their own developments, passing information across all groups and consulting the Project Team for knowledge resources and partnerships. This project started by dissipating the shrouded uncertainty with steady flow of information activities.

Warum kaufen, wenn man auch leihen kann, was man nur selten benutzt? Diese Idee steckt hinter den vielen Sharing-Angeboten, die derzeit überall aus dem Boden sprießen. Ob Autos, Kleider, Bohrmaschinen oder Arbeitsräume – all das muss man heute nicht mehr selbst besitzen: zumindest in größeren Städten gibt es Unternehmen oder nachbarschaftliche Projekte, die eine Nutzung auf Zeit anbieten. Sie kopieren damit das uralte Geschäftsmodell von Bibliotheken, die seit jeher ihre Bestände so verwalten, dass deren gemeinsame Nutzung durch eine Vielzahl von Menschen möglich wird. Was verändert sich nun für Bibliotheken, wenn so viele Nachahmer auf der Bildfläche erscheinen? Die Bücherhallen Hamburg liefern ein Beispiel, auf welche Weise Bibliotheken ‚grüner‘ gestaltet werden können. Die Optimierung der Beleuchtung spielte eine entscheidende Rolle im Rahmen der Umbaumaßnahmen, um das kürzlich bezogene Kontorhaus den Anforderungen der Zentralbibliothek anzupassen. In Zusammenarbeit mit einem erfahrenen Lichtplaner und dem Architekten wurde die Beleuchtung entsprechend der Nutzung und dem Zweck der unterschiedlichen Zonen umgestaltet. Die einzelnen Bibliothekszonen mit eingesetzten Lampen, Leuchten und deren technischen Details sowie die daraus resultierenden Energieeinsparpotenziale werden beschrieben. Die Kosten werden den künftigen Ersparnissen gegenübergestellt. Schließlich werden ein Ausblick und der Anreiz zur Optimierung der Beleuchtung hinsichtlich eines positiven Einflusses auf Kundenzufriedenheit, Energie- und Kostenersparnis in der eigenen Bibliothek gegeben. Bücherhallen Hamburg – as one example of sustainability in libraries – made their central library greener by improving the lighting. While refurbishing the building in order to make it meet the requirements of a contemporary public library, the lighting facilities have been upgraded appropriately for the different library zones in collaboration with a lighting designer and the architect. This paper describes each zone, the installed lights and technical details as well as the resulting energy and investment savings. Finally the author puts the issue of lighting in perspective and encourages the optimization of lighting in order to achieve a positive impact on energy and investment savings in one’s own library.

What are universities doing today to preserve their environments for the future? How can the academic curriculum support campus sustainability efforts? How can librarians integrate information literacy in campus/STEM sustainability research? At Fresno State in California, incoming first year STEM students are part of a special research class designed to teach basic scientific research skills focusing on sustainability efforts. In addition, this research program is designed to recruit and retain first year STEM majors from women and underrepresented groups. This paper covers the academic librarian’s and six student teaching assistant’s experiences and examples of supporting campus sustainability research that utilizes information literacy skills. For the past three years, the academic librarian has been embedded in planning campus sustainability programs and research to support this effort. The paper provides a brief overview of the research questions and problems that students encountered from the levels of air pollution on campus to biodiversity in the campus gardens to food waste management. The paper will consider these questions, instruments, and the results to design their own campus/school sustainability program that integrates information literacy and research skills for their students and classes. The paper also shares the students’ perspectives and feedback on their experiences in learning and researching sustainability as a student and as an instructional student assistant at Fresno State.

Universities, as organisations engaged in education, research and community services, play an important role in promoting sustainability and should be an example of a sustainable organisation. The Carbon Footprint (CF) is a very useful decision-making tool that allows organisations to measure and communicate the effect of their activities on the environment. To do so, it is necessary to have tools capable of calculating, tracking and reporting their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, as well as guiding the actions for reducing and offsetting them. The aim of this article is to present a tool specifically designed to calculate the carbon footprint of universities, called CO2UNV. This tool is able to quantify the CO2 equivalent (CO2e) emissions for scopes 1 (direct GHG emissions), 2 (electricity indirect GHG emissions) and 3 (other indirect GHG emissions), for a university as a whole and for the different buildings/units that it is made up of. It includes, by default, the typical emission sources of an education centre and their corresponding emission factors. However, it is totally adaptable to any other type of organisation thanks to the possibility of including new emission sources and of updating all the emission factors (by default and new). It is also capable of evaluating the evolution of the CF over time, and the CO2e offsets achieved by contributing to offset projects. The results report includes input data and the graphical representation of results. Finally, CO2UNV is applied to calculate and offset the CF of the Universitat Jaume I (Spain), and the study concludes with its validation according to applicability and accuracy criteria.

What sustainable measures are there for academic libraries? In which areas can academic libraries be active? Furthermore, what are the challenges and opportunities of implementing ecologically sustainable action? These are the research questions of an empirical study conducted at the Freie Universität Berlin. The results of the qualitative research show the practical skills required and estimate the scope for action when it comes to promoting sustainable action at an academic library. In this article, the study is presented and three fields of action are examined as an example of sustainable measures in academic libraries: paper-saving workplace design, the removal of plastic bags and use of energy-saving IT equipment. It is not that there are simply transferable best practice cases in the area of sustainable library management; however, the examples presented here can draw attention to fields of action. They create awareness of the opportunities while, at the same time, highlighting the challenges and difficulties that can arise when changing to more sustainable library management.
